Possible Punishments
Florida courts do not see driving with suspended license as a minor offense. Typical punishments for this offense include more than $1,000 in fines, impounding an offender’s car, and jail time. In Florida, receiving three convictions for driving with a suspended license within a five-year time span results in classification as a habitual traffic offender. This means harsher penalties. Additionally, driving on a suspended license as a felony offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and $5,000 fine.
It is important to know that a person can only be guilty of driving with a suspended license if he was aware that his license was suspended. The DMV often neglects to inform drivers that their licenses are suspended or claims to have mailed notices even though the driver never received one.
Working with the DMV
Dealing with the Florida DMV is a bizarre process involving a maze of bureaucratic steps. The laws are often confusing and obscure. We can represent you before the DMV and explain your situation.
Reasons for Suspended Licenses
Florida courts can suspend driving licenses for a vast number or reasons. Some are intuitive, such as punishment following a DUI or acquiring too many points on your license, e.g., 12 points in one year. However, many have nothing to do with driving, such as failing to pay a civil judgment, failure to pay child support, possession of marijuana as minor, etc.
We can help anyone with accusations of driving on a suspended license, as well as other charges, and ultimately regain drivers’ licenses.
