Deadly Teen Car Accident in Florida

Now that teens are back at school, it is important to be more aware than ever of car accident risks involving inexperienced drivers. A recent report in CBS 4 Miami discusses a deadly teen car crash involving three Florida teenagers. The accident highlights the dangers associated with teen driving and highlights the need for parents to learn more about teen driving safety and car crash prevention.

Getting the Facts About the Recent Teen Car Crash in South Florida

According to news reports, the accident involved three Florida teenagers, including two teen brothers and another teen girl. The two brothers were 19-year-old Oscar Flores and 17-year-old Daniel Flores. The third teen was 15-year-old Isabella Paoletta. Law enforcement officials do not have clear information about how the accident happened. However, the information contained in an article in the Herald-Tribune suggests that the crash occurred just after midnight when the teens were traveling westbound in the Sarasota area. They were in a four-door sedan when, “for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the car, struck the sidewall of the bridge, a tree, and at some point, Paoletta was ejected from the car.”

Sarasota emergency responders arrived at the scene after the vehicle caught on fire. Both Flores brothers were “found dead inside the car,” according to reports. One witness described the vehicle as being “fully engulfed” in flames and noted that it was difficult to see clearly. The accident occurred on the John Ringling Causeway.

Learning More About Teen Driving Safety

Parents and teens alike should take steps to make teen driving safer in Florida. According to an article from the National Safety Council (NSC), about 50 percent of all teenagers will be involved in a car accident by the time they graduate from high school. Teen drivers most often get into car crashes because of their inexperience. Indeed, as the article explains, “they struggle judging gaps in traffic, driving, the right speed for conditions, and turning safely, among other things.”

To ensure that teens stay safe behind the wheel, the NSC recommends that parents establish rules for their teenage drivers, which the NSC calls the “5 to Drive.” Those rules include the following:

  • Never use a cell phone in any capacity when you are behind the wheel, including to talk, text, or browse the internet;
  • Do not drive with other teen passengers;
  • Always drive the speed limit and avoid speeding;
  • Never drink alcohol and drive;
  • Always wear a seat belt, whether you are the driver or passenger in an automobile.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recommends that parents and teens work together to develop a driving contract, which holds teens accountable for safe driving. It is also important for parents to remember that they set an example for their teens when they are behind the wheel. As such, parents should follow the rules outlined above, avoiding distractions behind the wheel and obeying traffic rules at all times.
