We interviewed Nicole to learn a little bit more about her passion for the law and her clients.
Why did you become a lawyer?
As a young child, I attended a field trip to the Queens Supreme Court. I was fascinated by the interaction of the attorneys and the court. At that moment, I knew that being an attorney was my calling. As I began my study, I was introduced to many wonderful lawyers, and I aspired to be a great lawyer, as well
Tell us a story about your life that helped define who you are?
Both of my parents are immigrants. My father, who earned a Ph.D. in Naturopathic Medicine, often after working all day at Beth Israel Hospital and met with clients to provide them with homeopathic remedies. My mother worked in a Bank for most of her career, advancing over the years. The idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination and initiative was profound. As a child, I spent summers with my grandparents in Saint Martin which only reinforced the importance of hard work and community. My grandfather, often woke up early in the morning, running his own business to make sure that his son and four grandchildren wanted for nothing. Arriving on the island, I can recall feeling like royalty because, from the moment I disembarked from the plane, I was greeted by people who knew and loved my family. Watching my parents and grandparents work hard to provide my siblings and I with so many opportunities set the tone for everything I know about having a strong work ethic and my sense of community.
What do you find most rewarding about your career?
Throughout my career, I have been presented with opportunities to help people, and the challenges I face intellectually, emotionally and mentally is not for the weak. From the onset of my decision to pursue a career in law, the idea of being surrounded by intelligent, stimulating and strong-willed people who wish to help others, positively affect every facet of society and make a difference has always been what I have found to be most rewarding.
Is there a case that is memorable for you?
Several years ago, I represented a young single mother. She was referred to me by her mother, a prior client. My client was rear-ended by a utility truck. Having not secured histools properly, the driver was unable to stop when his drill fell under his brake pedal. He rear-ended my client at full speed as she waited for the traffic light to change. As a result of the wreck, my client had to be removed from the vehicle by the jaws of life and suffered disc injuries in her spine that required surgery. Attempts to settle my client’s claim failed, and with the assistance of Partner Joe Landy, we filed suit. After several months of litigating the case, the insurance company settled. Fortunately, we were able to secure a settlement that more adequately addressed my client’s injuries. This settlement helped to address the devastating impact this accident had on her life and her family’s life. Being able to assist this young mother, early in my personal injury career, made it clear to me that handling personal injury matters would be one of the most rewarding avenues for me to provide my services.
